Veal blunts Jordyn’s Charge in Fireball Derby.

Jamie Veal is in stellar form this Victorian season with two wins and a podium in three races so far with Avalon Raceway being his apparent playground.

Young ace Jordan Charge however bounced back from a disastrous Avalon opening meeting where engine issues ended his night early, to share the feature front row with fellow “kid” Todd Moule, This was an important moment in the sport with a couple of young gassers blocking out the front row.

The main event which ran almost non-stop was a scintillating high speed affair with cars all over the track and moves and counter moves galore.

Charge did nothing wrong all race, but the experience of Veal was the edge that saw him take the win from Charge and former series champion Rusty Hickman.

Brash American Thomas “The Midwest Mouth” Meseraull in the Brett Smith #39 ran home fourth on his first visit to Avalon for a number of years and only his second time here. Glen Sutherland, Andrew Hughes, Michael Tancredi, Jordan Rae, Terry Rankin, Tate Frost, Grant Anderson and Moule where all on the lead lap with Peter Doukas, Brett Milburn, Tim Hutchins, Chris Solomon, David Aldersley and Chad Gardner a lap down. Dennis Jones and Corey McCullagh were the only non-finishers.

While Jordyn’s run out front was seemingly smooth leading the first 18 laps, behind him and Veal there was high speed action everywhere as the reprofiled track has definitely upped the momentum and flow of the lap and hence the speed.

Moule was able to fight the good fight for two thirds of the race before plummeting out of the top ten over the last 8 laps.

Six cars fought out the C-Main sprint with “Fast” Eddie Lumbar taking the win and transfer ahead of David Dennison, Jett Bell, Phil Micallef, Kim Loong-Gosling and Ross Jarred.

For the first time in a long time there was a 20 car B-Main that was won by Doukas, from Rankin, Anderson, Milburn, Solomon and Frost. How’s that for a quality B-main?

Missing out on a transfer were Josh Buckingham, Parker Scott, American Chase Randall who struggled all night, Luke Storer, defending series champ Boby Daly, Daniel Storer, Brooke Buckingham, Lumbar. Steven Loader, Mitchell Smith and Dennison. Terry Kelly pulled in after 6 laps and Ryan Davis spun and pulled a monster wheelie that saw him tip over and Multiple Australian Modified Production Sedan Cham Kye Walters also failed to finish.

Conversely, the Super Sedan feature, while being fast and close, was devoid of any passing as none of the sedan steerers seemed prepared to venture off the bottom groove. Maybe the track was past its prime after the Sprintcar feature!

Anyway, backing up his recent win at Wahgunya Speedway was Tyson Moon who led home Jamie Collins who pressured Moon all the way. Dylan Barrow completed the podium from Mick Nicola Jnr and Brock Atkins in the second Moon team car. Super veterans Dave Mackenzie and Lionel West were next ahead of Trav Ramsdale, Jimmy Harris, Darren Giacometti and Stephen Hodder with Darren Clarke the only other finisher. Mitchell Rigney was a non-finisher as was Danny Amato with steering damage following contact but his was inconsequential compared to the steering damage of Ricky Ashmore.
